The Association of Volleyball Professionals — AVP — brought its upstart AVP League to Aspen for the first time on Saturday. Playing at Koch Park — home of the longtime Labor Day tradition, the Mother Lode — a sold-out crowd saw six Olympians take the court over four games.

In its third year of existence, the AVP League is a team-based concept that includes eight main tour stops during the season, most in notable coastal locations. The league kicked off its season May 30-31 in Belmar, New Jersey, with Aspen serving as the second stop this weekend.

The league features eight city-based franchises, each with a women’s duo and a men’s duo. Four of those teams are in Aspen this weekend: the Palm Beach Passion, Miami Mayhem, Brooklyn Blaze and New York Nitro. The four teams not competing in Aspen are the San Diego Smash, L.A. Launch, Austin Aces and Dallas Dream.
