Aspen and Basalt soccer teams win
The state-ranked Basalt High boys soccer team earned its sixth straight victory with a 3-nil shutout over Colorado Rocky Mountain School in a Class 3A Western Slope League match Saturday in Carbondale.Basalt goalkeeper Jamie Wirkler had an easy day while chalking up his fourth shutout in as many games as Basalt improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. In fact, Wirkler only had to make three saves against the Oysters, who fell to 1-2 overall with the loss.Basalt senior Cy Eaton scored a goal and had two assists to lead the ‘Horns. Junior Felipe Sanchez and freshman Matt Schoeller also scored in the contest.Aspen back at itAfter a two-week layoff from games due to the school district’s Experiential Education program, the Aspen High boys soccer team beat Grand Junction Central 3-2 on the road Saturday.D.J. Furth, Ryder Fyrwald and Carlos Rojas scored for the Skiers. Matt Cooper and Jaime Bernard had assists for Aspen. Aspen broke open a 1-1 tie at halftime with two second-half goals.Aspen improved to 3-1 overall on the season. Central dropped to 0-6.Meanwhile, today at 4 p.m. at the AHS field, Aspen hosts Basalt in the first meeting of the ‘Horns and the Skiers this season.
