Timothy Christopher Howe
Timothy died peacefully at home in Oxnard on Friday, May 30th. The cause was metastatic melanoma.
Born in Santa Monica on January 16, 1933 to Elsa Castnerand Kenneth Howe, Tim became an avid surfer and skier early in life, which took him from La Jolla to Los Angeles, Aspen to Santa Fe, Monte Vista to Ventura and Boulder to Oxnard.
Timothy graduated from Midland School, in Los Olivos, California,Class of ‘51. He served as President of the seniorclass, French club and Captain of the cross-countryteam. In 1956 he earned a degree in Oceanography from UCLA, where he was also a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and the Bruins water polo team. Simultaneously he served with distinction as a Naval ensign, eventually based in San Diego.
Timothy came to Aspen in 1961 with his young family, whom he supported by restoring Victorian houses, ski patrolling at Buttermilk, and later specializing in avalanche detection and prevention for the Aspen Mountain Ski Corporation.
Ever restless, Tim managed to build and live in, from the ground up, passive solar homes in Crested Butte, Santa Fe and Old Snowmass, all of which continue to be enjoyed and appreciated by the subsequent occupants to this day.
All who knew Tim will remember his love affair with jazz and classical music, cooking and raising pigs, breeding Labrador Retrievers and hunting, reading and good company. His dark humor, insatiable love of women and his unique outlook on life will be greatly missed.
Timothy is survived by his four children: Robin, Jane, Allison and Timothy II, his sister, Matilda Buck, and dozens of grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom reside in Los Angeles.
