It’s before 6 a.m. and Lara Xaiz, wildlife coordinator for the city of Aspen, is walking through an alley in downtown Aspen.

This proactive patrol is something she does every morning, looking for violations of city codes for bear-resistant containers and evidence of bear intrusions into trash or recycling.

As bear activity increases, the reality of bear perseverance and what she called “dumpster fails,” along with the need for increased compliance and vigilance, is evident throughout town through photos Xaiz shared.
