Miller: Let fish live

(re: “Colorado Parks and Wildlife releases cause of death for hundreds of fish in Grizzly Reservoir,” Aug. 26)
The death of nearly 200 fish at Grizzly Reservoir is tragic. Yet, billions more die each year not from poor water quality but from fishing.
Fish are fascinating aquatic animals — every bit as complex as the dogs and cats who share our homes. They can count, plan ahead, and communicate with one another underwater. They also suffer: Researchers have found that fish endure intense pain for at least 10 minutes after being caught and exposed to air — sometimes much longer.
Fishing not only depletes aquatic populations, but also disrupts fragile ecosystems. Going vegan helps protect waterways and allows our recreation to truly harmonize with nature.
It’s time to rethink how we treat fish — and that starts with letting them live.
