A lightning strike in the Basalt area ignited a tree on Wednesday afternoon, July 16. The strike ignited the fire between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. above the Lake Christine shooting range during a lightning storm.

“We are responding to a single tree lightning strike in the lava rocks,” said Roaring Fork Fire Rescue Deputy Chief of Operations Richard Cornelius. “Multiple resources are assigned.”

According to Cornelius, the fire was estimated at half an acre. Crews were working to dig a line around the fire at approximately 5:30 p.m. and Cornelius said there is no further risk of spread and no structures are threatened.
