Juvenile mountain lion seen in Basalt multiple times
Last week, several incidents were reported in Basalt involving a juvenile mountain lion.
According to Basalt Police Lieutenant Aaron Munch, at least one person saw the animal approach their window and growl late at night.
“Last week, we received a report that a juvenile mountain lion looked in someone’s window and growled,” said Munch. “Then, one of our officers saw a juvenile mountain lion in town on Friday, but we haven’t had any reports since then.”
The Basalt Town Manager’s report indicates that there have also been suspicions that the mountain lion was involved in the disappearances of two house cats, although Munch and Colorado Parks and Wildlife could not confirm those claims.
“We do have reports of a juvenile mountain lion around Basalt. We have also received reports of missing cats, but have not confirmed they were killed by the mountain lion,” said CPW Northwest Region Public Information Officer Rachael Gonzales.
CPW is aware of all reports and prepared to take action should the mountain lion be discovered in Basalt again.
“If CPW staff has the opportunity, we will capture and relocate the mountain lion,” said Gonzales.
