A 64-year-old woman was involved in a bicycle accident on Castle Creek Road that resulted in her death on Monday.
Michelle Mulrooney Jackoway, an attorney who split time between Pitkin County and Beverly Hills, California, was biking back from lunch at Pine Creek Cookhouse on an electric bike when she lost control of her bike and crashed into the embankment on the side of the road, according to Sheriff Michael Buglione with the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office. Jackoway was riding with a group.
“It was a tragic accident,” Buglione said.
According to Parker Lathrop, chief deputy of operations at the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Jackoway was biking downhill when the accident occurred. Members in her party quickly called for help, and the Sheriff’s Office responded to the call along with the Aspen Ambulance District at approximately 2:30 p.m.
A Pitkin County alert was sent out closing the road near mile marker 6 on Monday at 2:54 p.m. The accident was called as a “single-electrike bike” accident in a Pitkin County Coroner’s Office press release. Sheriff’s Office staff clarified that this means there was no involvement with an automobile or other bikers.
The ambulance district pronounced Jackoway dead at the scene. On Wednesday, the press release from the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity and clarified that the cause of death is still pending an autopsy.
“When an autopsy occurs, it can take up to six weeks to get all the results back,” Chief Deputy Audra Thompson said. “We typically don’t release any other information until that’s finalized.”
