As the first of a number of open houses to review and provide feedback on the Pitkin County draft Comprehensive Plan gets going Tuesday, residents, workforce, and visitors are invited to participate.

The Comprehensive Plan is a component of the Vision 2050 planning process, a forward-looking policy document to guide future decision-making. Its aim is to “implement bold climate action while balancing our economy, preserving our rural and wild lands, and supporting an equitable and affordable community.”

The first open house took place Tuesday at the Aspen Fire Station. Additional open houses this month include:

  • Oct. 8: Carbondale Third Street Center, 4 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 9: Basalt Library Community Room, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 16: Snowmass Town Hall, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 16: Virtual webinar https://forms.gle/MJcx1YLH4hvnD8Vs5, noon to 1:30 p.m.

“From the impacts of climate change to housing affordability, transportation, and growth management, Pitkin County has an opportunity to consider these topics comprehensively in a single policy document,” Nicole Rebeck-Stout, Pitkin County deputy director of community development, said in a press release. “These open houses are a chance for our community to review the draft plan, and to weigh in on how we can best move forward together through various implementation measures, while keeping various tradeoffs in mind.”

The Comprehensive Plan builds on years of community collaboration through the Community Growth Advisory Committee, the Vision 2050 Comprehensive Plan Workgroup with Caucus representation, and the work of the Planning and Zoning Commission. The draft plan centers around four identified values: Bold Climate Action, a Balanced Economy, Rural Preservation, and Equity and Affordability.

The open house events will feature interactive activities designed to make planning accessible, according to the release. The community is encouraged to participate in mapping exercises to review locations for housing and explore strategies for future implementation.
