The town of Basalt is warning the community of scam emails that might be circulating asking residents and applicants for projects to submit payments on an attached invoice.
“The town will never ask for an electronic payment for an invoice transmitted via email to the public,” a press release states.
All town of Basalt staff and council emails are first name dot last name at Basalt.net (for example, John.Doe@Basalt.net). The scam email is using the web address: planning.basalt@usa.com. The emails appear to be using data from publicly available applications, the press release confirms. An example of the scam email can also be found on Basalt’s website in the Newsflash section.
When in doubt, individuals can call to verify before opening any attachment or responding and should never open or pay an email invoice from an unknown sender.
Anyone with questions can contact Basalt at 970-927-4701 or use the website basalt.net to contact a staff member directly.
