Aspen Ruggerfest in full swing at Rio Grande Park

Maybe after three more days.
But Rio Grande Park certainly took over as Aspen’s primary rugby venue for Thursday’s opening of the annual Ruggerfest rugby tournament.
With Wagner Park out of commission because of the field renovation project, all of the Ruggerfest games in the 2014 tournament will be played at Rio Grande Field — Rio Grand Rugby Stadium, if you will.
Play kicked off Thursday morning in the 55s and 45s divisions for players 55-and-older and 45-and-older.
On Friday ,play will be staged in the 35s division, with the first match scheduled for 8 a.m. Matches will be played every hour, on the hour at Rio Grande Park.
The Gents 35s from Aspen are the defending Ruggerfest champions in the 35s division.
On Saturday, the featured open division will begin play at 8 a.m.
Championships in the various divisions will be played on Championship Sunday, starting at 8 a.m.
The 35s final is set for 2:15 p.m. Sunday.
The open division final will be played at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Denver Barbarians are the four-time defending Ruggerfest champions in the open division.
Other events in connection with Ruggerfest 2014 include the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast from 7-10 a.m. Saturday at the theatre adjacent to Rio Grande Park (Hurst Theater).
Also Saturday, there will be a benefit for youth rugby at the Eagle Club in Aspen. Details will be announced at the rugby matches today and Saturday at Rio Grande Rugby Stadium.
