Edward Alden Richards Jr., known to many simply as Alden or AR, passed away on September 14, 2025.

Born on February 21, 1954, in Philadelphia to Alden Sr. and Lorraine, Alden was the oldest of five siblings. He grew up in Ocean City, New Jersey, where his love for the ocean began. Alden spent his early years surfing alongside his brothers and friends, developing a deep connection to nature, adventure, and sport—passions that would shape the course of his life.

He made his way to the University of Hawaii, class of 1982. It was there that his adventurous spirit thrived. He continued surfing, embraced the aloha spirit of the islands, and discovered an enduring love for golf. Alden earned his PGA card during those years and celebrated his first hole-in-one, just one of many milestones in a life full of them.

In 1991, Alden moved to Aspen, a place that became his home and the heart of his legacy. There, he poured his energy and passion into shaping young lives through the game of golf. As Executive Director of Aspen Junior Golf, Alden wasn’t just a coach—he was a mentor and a champion for youth development. Through golf, he taught more than technique—he nurtured confidence, resilience, and integrity. Many still credit him today not only for their swing but for the values that guide them. A true visionary, Alden was instrumental in securing Aspen Junior Golf’s foundation for generations to come.

Above all, Alden’s greatest joy was his family. He met and married Patsy, and together they built a beautiful life over the next 30 years, supporting each other’s dreams. It was in being a father that Alden found his greatest sense of purpose. He gave Makaela and Austin guidance, unwavering love, support, and belief in who they are and who they could become. Grounding his family in faith, Alden led with strength and a deep commitment to the values that shaped their lives.

Alden lived with passion, humor, and a heart full of love for his friends and family. He had a remarkable ability to inspire and create moments that left a lasting mark; connecting people in ways that only he could. His legacy will continue to ripple through the many hearts he touched. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. We will hold on to our moments with him, when heaven was right here on earth.

Alden is survived by his loving children, daughter Makaela and son Austin, as well as Makaela’s mother, Patsy and Austin’s mother, Therese. He is also survived by his beloved mother, Lorraine, and his siblings Doug, Nancy, Jeff and Scott.

Please join us for a gathering in loving memory today October 2nd, 2–4 PM at the Aspen Golf Course: Red Mountain Grill.
