Wheeler Opera House presents ‘Soundings’ with multifaceted artist

The Wheeler Opera House will host an afternoon of poetry and exploration, “Soundings: A Reading and Workshop with New York-based Artist David Gonzalez,” from 4-5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 15.

Professional storyteller, musician, and poet Gonzalez weaves ancestral memory, family stories, and cosmic vision into an inspiring tapestry of language and song.

“We are working to identify more opportunities for the artists performing at the Wheeler to engage with the community through interactive activities like workshops and masterclasses,” Wheeler Executive Director Mike Harrington said in a press release.

Harrington added, “Our goal is to create space for local residents to build connections, exercise some artistic muscle, and perhaps learn something new about themselves or their craft.”

This session is an opportunity for locals to develop their skills in personal reflection, collaborative creation, and artistic self-expression, guided by Gonzalez’ unique approach to poetry and performance.

The event will feature a dynamic poetry reading by the renowned poet, followed by an interactive workshop in which participants will explore techniques using sound and voicing text, inspired by astronomy themes from his’ stage show, “Spacetime.”

Critics have praised Gonzalez’ voice as “exuberant, erudite, and deeply human.”

This free workshop is created for adults ages 18 and up, welcoming anyone keen to explore poetry and performance in a supportive, collaborative environment.
