Snowmass history: West Village under construction

“12 business leases signed at Snowmass” announced The Aspen Times in summer of 1967. “Snowmass-at-Aspen has leased space for 12 businesses, received deposits on four others, and is in final negotiations for the remaining space in the 20-unit commercial square of West Village, now under construction, Joen P. McBride, Snowmass commercial development manager, stated this week. The commercial area, designed by Fredric Benedict and Assoc., Aspen, will house 30,000 square feet of shops and restaurants scheduled to open Dec. 16, 1967. Leased to date are: Snowmass Sports, John Oakes and Gale Spence, Aspen; liquor store, Harry Nichoalds, boulder; drugstore, International Shops, Inc. (owners of Glenrose Drug, Aspen). Refectory-at-Snowmass restaurant, David L. Paterson and John Leondakis, San Francisco; The Tower restaurant, Howard Englander and Jack Brendlinger, Aspen; book Store, Diane Baker, San Francisco. Photo and poster shop, Norm and Ann Clasen, Aspen; beauty salon, Amelia Kopp, Aspen; real estate and home management office, Mason and Morse, Aspen; Scandinavian Gift Shop, Jacque Iselin and Kjell Reimers, San Francisco. Laundry and dry cleaning, James Porter (owner of Red Mountain Cleaners, Aspen), Snowmass; and Wooden Nickel antique shop, Tim and Jane Gold, Aspen. Others who have made deposits or signed letters of intent are: Fredric Benedict, architectural office; Eve Homeyer, House of Ireland (Aspen), Irish import shop; Richard Marshall, Lenwood, Kan., card and candy shop.” Additionally, boutiques, a nightclub, a grocery store, restaurants, a gas station, a rental car company, an art gallery, a visitor & reservation center, and a movie theater were all under negotiations along with a medical clinic, location undetermined.

Aspen Fire Protection District pushes two ballot initiatives to improve funding
The Aspen Fire Protection District is presenting two funding proposals for the Nov. 25 ballot: a mill levy extension of 0.24 mills and a new sales tax of 0.5%.
Aspen area included in ‘release zone’ for wolverine reintroduction
The Aspen area has been included in one of three general release zones for the reintroduction of wolverines into the state, according to preliminary information from Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s developing plan.
