Clothing company Roots Canada Ltd. has left its South Galena Street retail space, which it has occupied for the past 10 years.

The lease for the 719-square-foot space, adjacent to Belly Up Aspen, expired Wednesday, but the Toronto-based company left a few weeks early, according to commercial real estate broker Karen Setterfield. She described the move as a corporate decision.

“Corporate just decided to make a change,” she said.

Setterfield said retail turnover in Aspen has been low this spring, and she doesn’t expect the space to stay vacant long. She was anticipating an offer for the Galena Street space Thursday, but nothing had been finalized.

“Demand is very high for spaces, and there’s very few vacancies,” she said.

Roots, established in 1973, has more than 200 stores located in Canada, the United States and Asia. It has contributed apparel for Olympic athletes dating back to the 1970s and more recently in 2002 as the official outfitter for the Canadian Olympic team.

Also on Thursday, Goldies, a women’s clothing boutique, returned to Aspen after four or five years away, according to Setterfield. In its first Aspen stint, Goldies operated in an Aspen location for more than 20 years. Its new space is located on Cooper Avenue adjacent to the Aspen Square Condominium Hotel. The lease began Thursday, and store operation begins in June.
