Preps: Aspen soccer beats CRMS ahead of showdown with Basalt; volleyball at home

Austin Colbert/The Aspen Times
The Aspen High School boys soccer team overcame a couple of lightning delays to beat Colorado Rocky Mountain School on Tuesday in Carbondale.
The 3-0 victory means the Skiers are now 2-1 overall entering Thursday’s home game with rival Basalt. The varsity game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on the AHS turf. It’s the first of two matchups between the local programs; the second is scheduled for Oct. 14 in Basalt.
The youthful Longhorns are 1-5-1 overall, their last outing a 4-2 loss at Delta on Sept. 13.
Roaring Fork is 4-1 overall following Tuesday’s 2-1 win at Steamboat Springs. The Rams host Timnath on Saturday, with a 2 p.m. start.
AHS volleyball finally at home
Aspen volleyball will finally make its home debut on Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. league game against Cedaredge (3-4) inside the AHS gymnasium.
The Skiers are off to a strong start at 6-1 overall, the lone loss coming against Glenwood Springs. Following Thursday’s game, AHS will play at Basalt on Tuesday and at Roaring Fork next Thursday, Sept. 25.
Basalt hosted Vail Mountain on Tuesday, winning 3-2. It was the third straight win for the Longhorns, now 3-2 overall, after losing their first two matches. BHS plays at North Fork on Thursday before traveling to Steamboat on Saturday.
Roaring Fork is 2-8 overall following Tuesday’s 3-1 loss at Vail Christian.
Football teams hit the road
Aspen’s football season continues on Friday with a road game against Summit. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Frisco.
The Class 2A Skiers are 1-1 overall following last week’s home debut, a 49-7 loss to 3A Steamboat Springs (the official MaxPreps score has since been updated). AHS beat 1A Grand Valley in its Aug. 29 opener in Parachute, winning 40-0.
Aspen will return home next week, Sept. 26, by hosting Kent Denver to close out non-league play.
Summit, another 3A school, enters this week’s contest 0-2 overall with losses to Glenwood Springs (34-23) and Cañon City (42-8).
Basalt football is not only on the road this week, but completely out of state. The Longhorns (2-2) will play at 4 p.m. Friday against Teton, a game being played in Rock Springs, Wyoming, which is roughly halfway between the two schools. The contest came about because of Basalt’s difficulties in finding non-league opponents and the two coaches having known each other previously.
Teton is 1-2 overall, beating Declo in its Aug. 22 opener, 33-12, before losing to Sandpoint (42-28) and North Fremont (26-21).
After a bye week, Basalt will return home to host regional powerhouse Delta on Oct. 3 in the 2A West league opener.
Glenwood (2-2), fresh off its 13-7 upset of Basalt, is off this week before playing at George Washington on Sept. 27.
As for the rest …
We’ll get fresh results out after the weekend when scores have been updated.
Aspen softball is scheduled to host Delta at 2 p.m. Friday, while Basalt softball will host Montrose for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
There’s a cross-country race this Saturday in Fruita, with at least Aspen planning to attend. The Skiers’ home race, the annual Chris Severy Invitational, is scheduled for Oct. 4.
The end of the boys golf season is fast approaching. There are tournaments on Monday in both Gypsum and Grand Junction (Bookcliff), which are the final scheduled regular-season competitions for both Aspen and Basalt. After that it’s onto the state tournament, scheduled for Oct. 6-7 in Eagle.
There is no regional golf tournament this season, meaning all players will qualify for state based off of their regular-season tournament results. Qualifiers will be announced before state.
For the tennis fans, the Aspen boys will host Basalt on Monday afternoon (3 p.m. warm-ups) in what will be senior day for the Skiers. AHS also hosts Grand Junction Central on Tuesday in its home finale. Basalt’s final home match is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday against Central at Crown Mountain Park.
Regional tennis is scheduled for Oct. 9-10 in Grand Junction. State tennis is Oct. 16-18 in Pueblo.
