The Pitkin County Solid Waste Center will be temporarily closed from Friday, Oct. 24, until Sunday, Oct. 26, to facilitate paving operations on the reworked portion of Jack Gredig Lane.

Voters approved a ballot issue in 2024 to fund the expansion of and provide an additional 70 years to the Solid Waste Center through redevelopment and the relocation of several existing facilities and roads. The measure approved up to $22 million in bonds, repayable through landfill revenues, with no new taxes.

“The upcoming closure will allow for paving on the revised road alignment and will reconnect the two remaining asphalt sections of Jack Gredig,” the press release states. “During this period, the Solid Waste Center will be completely inaccessible to all customers.”

While the closure won’t have any impact on Highway 82, it will impact seasonal users who continue to utilize the Solid Waste Center during what many consider “off-season.”

“Realistically, we don’t have an offseason until the snow falls,” Solid Waste Manager Tyler Carvell said. “The fall season still has plenty of construction companies, landscapers, and homeowners trying to finish projects before winter. September and October can often be some of the busiest months of the year.”

Throughout 2025, the Solid Waste Center has already seen completed grading and civil improvements “to facilitate the future expansion work,” according to Carvell, including the upcoming paving work. Having the bulk of the dirt work in 2025 will set the center up to see completion of the vertical construction by the end of the 2026 construction season.

“On the design side of things, we are progressing with the new buildings and infrastructure package and should be issuing an RFP for construction towards the end of 2025 or early 2026,” Carvell said.

Following the paving work this week, normal operating hours of the Solid Waste Center will resume on Monday, Oct. 27.
