Pitkin County moves out of Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

Pitkin County announced on Friday it has officially lifted Stage 1 Fire Restrictions in coordination with regional fire officials following improvements in weather and local conditions.
Pitkin County is joining the White River National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management Upper Colorado River District in lifting restrictions, but a press release warns that the risk of wildfire never goes away in this region. Officials continue to urge residents and visitors to continue making fire safety a daily priority.
“Even with restrictions lifted, it only takes one careless action to start a wildfire,” Chris Breitbach, Pitkin County emergency manager, said in the release. “We’re asking everyone to continue practicing fire safety and to always check PitkinEmergency.com for the latest information before heading outdoors.”
The county reminds residents and visitors to:
- Be cautious with open flames — use designated fire rings or grills when available
- Fully extinguish all fires — drown with water, stir, and repeat until cold
- Avoid parking on dry vegetation — vehicle heat can spark fires
- Dispose of cigarettes properly — never discard them on the ground
- Stay informed — check pitkinemergency.com for the most current fire safety guidance
Violations of fire safety rules can still result in fines between $500 and $1,000, with possible jail time. Knowingly or recklessly burning during heightened fire danger periods remains illegal.
