Mountain Mayhem: Boogietime

The Fourth of July in Aspen has long been what I consider Boogietime: a weekend celebrating what philanthropist and businessman Boogie Weinglass started long ago with the Buddy Program’s signature events of a footrace and a fundraiser. This year’s pair of events brought friends, families, and neighbors together from across the Roaring Fork Valley in a powerful celebration of community, connection, and purpose.
Festivities began early on the Fourth under rainy skies as 700 runners and walkers of all ages gathered at the start line in Rio Grande Park for the race of their choice — 5 mile, 5K, or a family fun run. Fortunately, the clouds cleared shortly after the start to make way for a sunny finish, followed by the parade.
The celebration continued on July 5 with the Bash for the Buddies at Boogie’s Merry-Go-Round Ranch on McLain Flats. The “Making Waves – A Night of Beach Chic Elegance” theme inspired guests to dress in breezy prints and crisp summer linens, ready for a night of fun and philanthropy. A new bar, hosted by Woody Creek Distillers, offered a creative beach cocktail menu, while the “Taste of the Valley” cocktail hour featured bites from local favorites including Mollie Aspen, Hometeam BBQ, European Caterers, Catch Steak, Zig Zag, Fusion Catering, and Cache Cache.
During the program portion of the evening, the Buddy Program spotlighted its school-based program, which provides one-on-one mentoring during the school day for Buddy Pairs. A local school counselor and a Big Buddy shared heartfelt remarks about the importance of showing up for young people, especially during formative years when connection and encouragement can make all the difference.
The evening also honored Erika and Karim Souki, whose commitment to youth and philanthropy has left a lasting impact on the Buddy Program. Their support helped launch the Buddy Program’s 50th Anniversary Impact Campaign, which allowed the Buddy Program to expand services from Aspen and Carbondale into Glenwood Springs, increasing access to mentoring for families and youth across an even greater portion of the valley.
The night’s most moving moment came during the paddle raise, where guests helped raise over $350,000 in support of the Buddy Program’s four mentoring programs. These funds ensure the Buddy Program’s programs remain free and accessible to over 600 youth, families, and volunteers annually. After dinner, the talented 10-piece band Tunisia brought guests to their feet to dance. As the celebration came to a close, each attendee left with a sweet chocolate treat, generously donated Enstrom Candies, the perfect end to a meaningful weekend.
