Markalunas: Woefully insufficient

It is interesting to note that the two new developments at the base of Lift 1A will only provide two housing units on‐site, just one in each development. For operations that will employ hundreds, if not thousands, of employees, this on‐site housing requirement seems woefully insufficient. If this is what the city of Aspen code allows, they should not wonder why they have both affordable housing and traffic problems.

With regard to blowing the lid off demolition permits, why would you consider those modifications when you already have so much construction in progress that neighborhoods are unlivable and quality of life for residents is suffering? In last week’s paper, sales tax from construction activity is up 191% over last year and 133% year‐todate. Perhaps it is time for the City Council to consider reining‐in construction levels, not encouraging more, to reduce traffic impacts and preserve some semblance of our quality of life. Both Main Street and the West End, a residential neighborhood, are effectively gridlocked during every afternoon commute.
