Man found dead in Maroon Bells area; injuries to head and leg
A man believed to be in his 30s was found dead Saturday morning near Crater Lake in the Maroon Bells Wilderness area, authorities said Saturday evening.
The man, who has not been identified, was found just past 7 a.m. Saturday by another hiker who was on his way to climb the Bell Cord. The cause of death was not announced.
Members of Mountain Rescue Aspen arrived on scene, which was about a half-mile south of Crater Lake, at 9:38 a.m. and declared the man deceased.
The man had “several visible injuries to his head and leg, yet cause of death will be determined by an autopsy,” according a Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office statement. They believe the man was hiking alone and was in his early 30s.
After an investigation by Pitkin County officials, the man’s body was taken out of the area by foot to the Maroon Lake parking lot at about 1:30 p.m.
The victim’s identification will be released by the coroner’s office.
Professional dancers return to Aspen to perform in ‘The Nutcracker’
Roaring Fork Valley natives Emily Ridings and Nikki Ferry have come full circle when it comes to dance. Both studied dance with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (ASFB) as kids, continued their training with other prominent schools, and now return this weekend, as ASFB presents “The Nutcracker” at Aspen District Theater.
