Cops looking for McDonald’s mugger

John Colson

Police were still looking yesterday for a young man who ran up to a McDonald’s employee on Monday and grabbed several bank bags filled with cash.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m., according to Aspen Police Sgt. Gary Kalkman, as an unnamed employee left the restaurant headed for a nearby bank to make deposits for the day. She was carrying the bank bags in a McDonald’s food bag, Kalkman said.

As she approached the intersection of the Cooper Avenue and Mill Street malls, Kalkman said, a young, white male ran up behind her, grabbed the bag from her hand, and ran across Wagner Park. Kalkman said the victim was not injured in the incident.

Another man took off in pursuit of the thief when the girl yelled out, but gave up the chase about midway through the park, Kalkman said. Police have not located the man, but are hoping he will come in to give them any information he may have to help identify the thief.

The thief is described as between the ages of 15 and 20; five feet, eight inches tall and between 140 and 150 pounds; wearing a white T-shirt and gray, long pants; and sporting a nearly shaved head of blonde hair with a slightly longer “tuft” at the top of his forehead.

The victim, whose identity police have not released, said the thief may have been seated on a planter box near the entrance to McDonald’s when she came out, and that he may have been waiting for her, leading police to speculate that the young man knew the restaurant’s routines.

Police also are looking for a young, white man who may have been seated next to the suspect, and may be able to identify him.
