Colorado State Patrol to conduct chain law enforcement on I-70 this week
Drivers can reportedly be fined $500 for not complying with Colorado’s commercial chain law, or $1,000 if their vehicle is blocking a lane of travel
The Colorado State Patrol will be conducting chain law enforcement operations on Wednesday along Interstate 70.
The commercial vehicle chain law enforcement operation is planned on I-70 near Dotsero, according to a news release. Under state law, all commercial motor vehicles are required to carry chains from Sept. 1 to May 31.
The commercial vehicle chain law also applies to vehicles with a weight of 16,000 pounds used in commerce or as a means of transport for 16 or more passengers on public highways, the news release states.
Commercial vehicles must carry chains or approved alternative traction devices regardless of the current weather on I-70 west of Morrison to the Utah border; on Colorado Highway 9 from Frisco to Fairplay; Route 40 from Empire to the Utah border and on several other mountain roadways.
For not complying with the commercial vehicle chain law, drivers can be fined up to $500. If the vehicle is stuck or blocking the traveled roadway, the fine is $1,000, according to the State Patrol.
The operations are scheduled for dates with mild weather conditions to ensure commercial drivers are prepared for sudden weather changes. During inclement weather, it is not possible to conduct proactive chain checks because troopers are focused on responding to calls for service, according to the State Patrol.
