Carbondale man rolls car into ditch
A 30-year-old Carbondale man was arrested for drunken driving Sunday night after rolling his car in the Basalt area and injuring a passenger, police said Monday.
Thomas Malone admitted to drinking alcohol before driving and was charged with DUI and careless driving causing injury, according to an affidavit filed in Pitkin County Court.
Pitkin County sheriff’s deputies were called to 2500 W. Sopris Creek Road about 7 p.m. Sunday for an accident with injuries in which a car rolled multiple times, said Deputy Alex Burchetta.
The Subaru station wagon ended up in a ditch and Malone and his two female passengers were taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, said Trooper Nate Reid of the Colorado State Patrol, which investigated the incident. None were seriously injured, he said.
“Mr. Malone told me he was driving and swerved due to a rock in the road and that is why he rolled,” the affidavit states. “As Mr. Malone answered I noticed that he had slurred speech.”
Malone later failed roadside sobriety tests, but refused to be tested for alcohol, according to the affidavit. He was later taken to the Pitkin County Jail.
