Belinski: The chance to prove we value people

Yes on 7A sends a strong message of support for our whole community, especially for our youngest learners, working parents, and teachers.
There is not enough child care in our community — currently there are only enough slots for 44% of kids who need licensed care in our entire region (Aspen to Parachute). In addition, the options that are available are too expensive for many — the average cost is $1,400 per month for one child (that’s nearly $17,000 per year!).
I’m supporting 7A for three reasons.
First, it’s good for children. Kids with access to high quality child care and preschool are better prepared for kindergarten, read earlier, graduate high school at higher rates, and go to college more often, setting them up for life-long success.
Second, it’s good for families. Hardworking, middle-class parents can go to work and be productive at their jobs when they know their kids are in a reliable and safe environment during the workday.
Third, it’s good for teachers. In our region, preschool teachers and staff can barely afford to live in the communities they serve, with some making as little as $15 an hour. This measure would fund wage increases, allowing us to attract and retain educators.
Sometimes, we have a chance to prove that we truly do value people over power and possessions, and that the whole community matters — this is our chance.
There is so much good information about the need for childcare in our valley — please go to http://www.YesOn7A.com to find out more, and then vote YES on 7A.
