“A fellow went into the Delmonico restaurant, located at 421 E. Cooper Ave., last night and ordered a T-bone, the best in the house,” the Aspen Daily Times recounted on Oct. 12, 1888. “Charlie brought it to him and he ate it up to the last scrap. Watching his chance, he slipped off without paying. In a moment Charlie shot out the door after him. He saw the fellow running down past the bank like a race horse. He did not see what became of him, but parties in the Times office heard him fall among the boards in Bob Skinner’s cellar. He set up a terrible yell and it was thought he was killed for sure, but before an examination could be made he had crept out and disappeared.”
