“House is damaged,” reported the Aspen Times on July 9, 1936.

“Although they were a day late, three small boys who set out to have a real ‘grand and glorious Fourth’ made good all their anticipations, but in a much different way than they ever dreamed or expected. While Mr. and Mrs. Mike Brand were visiting at Ashcroft, one of their small sons, who was left at home, invited two of his pals over, and together they went up into the loft of the Brand barn and began their disastrous experiments with excelsior. The highly flammable material was soon beyond their control, although they made heroic efforts to quench the fire with a lawn hose, the fire spread to every part of the upper portion of the building. City volunteer firemen were called and soon had the menacing fire under control; but not before the paint had been blistered on the back part of the Brand home. It is not known just what the boys ‘got,’ but all the ‘older boys’ immediately thought of what would have happened when they were ‘just kids.'”
