Aspen’s vibrant new mural takes shape along South Galena Street

A vibrant new mural is taking shape along South Galena Street, merging artistic expression with pedestrian safety in a collaborative effort between the city of Aspen’s public art program and the engineering department.

The mural, located between Hopkins and Cooper avenues, began taking form May 28 and is expected to be completed by June 6.

“This project blends public art and public safety to raise awareness and enhance the streetscape, encouraging slower driving and a more walkable community,” said Jack Danneberg, senior project manager with Aspen’s engineering department. “Aside from being fun, pavement art enhances public safety for pedestrians by improving visibility, encouraging drivers to slow down, and contributing to a more walkable community.”

Once finished, the artwork will remain on the pavement until it naturally fades over time and with the effects of weather. The project is part of Aspen’s ongoing initiative to use public art to enhance the downtown streetscape and foster a more walkable, community-focused environment.

Designed by Denver-based artist Anthony Garcia Sr., the mural features bold, interlocking shapes in his signature ombre style. Colors like turquoise, burnt orange, and deep blue sweep across the asphalt, capturing movement and energy while symbolizing unity and connectivity.

Community members are invited to meet Garcia Sr. and learn more about the inspiration behind the work during a public event from 4-5 p.m., Wednesday, June 4, at the intersection of Hyman Avenue Mall and Galena Street.

The free gathering will include a Q&A with the artist, music from a DJ, popsicles, and an interactive art station open to all ages.
