Aspen Public Art and WE-cycle are collaborating in another year of the “Art in Motion” series that brings art to Aspen’s WE-cycle bicycles and kiosks.

The organizations are now accepting applications for five licensing opportunities for artists to display artwork in Aspen this summer. The call for artists is open through March 18.

Artists need to be 16 years or older to submit and must reside in the Roaring Fork Valley. Winning artists will each receive a $1,500 stipend.

“We welcome this opportunity to co-create a mobile art gallery that will shine a spotlight on the deep talents of Valley artists, while promoting bikeshare, both of which make our community a better place to live, work and visit,” said Lara Whitley, program lead of Aspen Public Art, in a press release announcing the program.

The art will be displayed on the bikes and kiosks in Aspen during the 2026 bikeshare season, which begins in May and extends through October.

Artists are encouraged to submit “bold, vibrant designs with strong graphic impacts that can be appreciated from a distance while also rewarding closer viewing.” Images of artwork can include painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, illustration, mixed media, collage and 3D works of art.

“‘Art in Motion’ integrates art into the rhythm of daily life by showcasing local artists’ work on over 100 bikes and at 38 locations within our community,” said Mirte Mallory, co-founder and executive director of WE-cycle, in the press release. “With every ride, the program invites people to witness beauty as the bikes roll through town, to celebrate place and to choose sustainable transportation. Pick a bike with art that speaks to you, hop on and enjoy a ride!”

A selection committee will review the applications and recommend artists based on three criteria – the artist’s merit of the artwork, the suitability and fit of the artwork to templates and design criteria and the commitment to artists pursuit. Each criteria will be weighed differently, at 40% for the first two criteria, and 20% for the last.

The application portal, information on the program, templates and design criteria are available at http://www.redbrickaspen.com.
