Aspen City Council has approved an update to the city’s Clean Air Act and banned the use of vapes and e-cigarettes in all public areas where smoking is already prohibited.
Those areas include:
- Within 25 feet of any public entrance
- All places of employment (i.e. restaurants, shops, offices) regardless of hours of operation
- Indoor public places (i.e. all businesses open to the public like nightclubs, restaurants, bars, retail shops, theaters, and public restrooms) regardless of whether it is a private event or if there is a fee to enter
- Outdoor service or dining areas (i.e. restaurant patios, bus stops, kiosks, and ATMs)
- The designated city-owned outdoor properties of Galena Plaza and Aspen Rec Center
- Public events (i.e. festivals, markets, and parades)
The new ordinance, which was decided last month, will go into effect July 10. According to a press release, this is “part of the city’s continued efforts to protect public health and promote a cleaner environment.”
Vaping will still be allowed in private residences, cigar bars established before Dec. 31, 2005, and outdoor areas not specified in the ordinance.
“This ordinance is intended to reduce secondhand exposure, discourage youth vaping, prevent litter and fire risks, and support a healthy, welcoming environment for all,” the press release states.
