A letter of warning
Dear Editor:This is an open letter to the Roaring Fork Valley community to ask for help. Ours is a community populated by a diversity of cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds. It is also my hometown. This letter is neither racial, cultural, or gender specific. Rather, it is intended to be a wake-up call.On Aug. 5, I was viscously attacked and beaten, in a possible attempted rape, after getting off the bus in Basalt. My attacker is still at large. I am both asking every citizen of our lovely valley for specific help in my case, and I am also pleading for an end to this violence in general.For decades, this valley has been a place people from all over the world have moved to so they can raise their families here, in an island of beauty, cleanliness, safety and prosperity amidst a world of despair. I know this because I was born here and returned shortly after graduating from college.What happened to me should NEVER happen to anyone, especially here! My attack was random and unprovoked. I have never met or seen the young man who violently beat me up while I was waiting for my ride home before or since. I suffered multiple cuts and contusions to my face and a badly swollen black eye, and I have still have blurred vision in one eye from the beating.Fortunately, I fought back. I bit my attacker’s hand so hard, he was knocked off me long enough where I was able to kick and hit him many more times during the attack to keep from being raped.Sadly, it has become clear that all parents have to tell their children to always be on alert, travel in pairs, take nothing for granted and keep a wary eye open.As for me, I plead that anyone with any information please come forward and help me bring my attacker to justice. I have great faith in this community and hope that by raising awareness this kind of violent act will not happen again. Together as a community we can all prevent someone from suffering as I have. La nuestra, es una comunidad habitada por una diversidad de culturas, razas y orígenes, es tambien el lugar donde nací. Esta carta no es de ningun mode racial, cultural o de un género específico. Por el contrario pretende ser una “llamada de alerta.”El pasado 5 de Agosto, fui gravemente atacada y golpeada en un possible intento de violacion, justo despues de haberme bajado del bus en Basalt, mi atacante aun esta suelto. Yo estoy pidiendo a cada ciudadano de nuestro amado valle tanto per ayuda especifica en mi caso, como una suplica para ponerle fin a la violencia en general.Por decadas, esta valle ha sido un lugar en donde personas de todo el mundo han encontrado un hogar para levantar sus familias en una isia de belleza, limpieza, seguridad y prosperidad, opuesto al mundo de desigualdad. Lo se porque nací aqui, y regresé tan pronto me gradue del college.Lo que me sucedio no Ie debe suceder a nadie NUNCA, especialmente aqui! Mi ataque fue al azar y sin provocacion. Nunca antes mientras esperaba por quien me lleva a casa habia visto al hombre joven que violentamente me golpeo ni lo he vuelto a ver desde entonces. Yo sufri varias cortadas y contusiones en la cara, un ojo negro y seriamente inflamado por el que aun tengo la vision borrosa debido al ataque.Afortunadamente yo me defendi. Golpee al atacante muy fuerte con mis manos, cuando tuve la oportunidad de patearlo y golpearlo muchas veces para evitar ser violada.Tristeinente, es evidente que todos los padres deben decirie a sus hijos que se deben mantener alerta, caminar acompañados, no tomar nada a la ligera y mantener los ojos bien abiertos.De mi parte pido que cualquier persona que tenga algun tipo de información, de un paso al frente y me ayude a encontrar al atacante para que se haga justicia. Yo tengo mucha fé en mi comunidad y espero que mediante esta llamada de atencion actos de violencia como este no se vuelvan a repetir.
