12-hour uphill race set Sunday

Again and again.

The first Red Bull Rise, a 12-hour uphill endurance event at Aspen Mountain, will take off Sunday morning from the base of the gondola.

Uphill runners will compete in solo, duo and team divisions. They will run/hike up Aspen Mountain and ride the gondola down.

Then, up again.

At the end of 12 hours, the runners with the most completed laps will win their respective divisions.

Advance registration is required; there is no race-day sign-up.

There is a total purse of $6,000 for the event.

The first-place woman and man each will win $1,250.

Second place will pay $750.

The competitors will take the Vertical K route up Aspen Mountain — 3,000 vertical feet over 3 miles.

The solo winner will be crowned at 7 p.m. Sunday.

In connection with the event at Aspen Mountain, the gondola will operate later than usual. There also will be a $10 special gondola foot passenger ticket from 4-6:30 p.m. There will be a DJ and a cash bar at the Sundeck.
