Westley John Alexander Crouch is a lifelong son of Western Colorado, whose professional and personal identity is inextricably tied to the region’s high desert mesas, alpine valleys, and storied rivers.
Raised amid the striking topographies of the Western Slope, he has long drawn inspiration from the land and the people who shape it—those who came before, those who remain, and those still arriving with stories of their own. Now, as a journalist for The Aspen Times, he channels that reverence for place into a vocation devoted to truth, community, and the nuanced cadence of life in the Roaring Fork Valley.
Crouch’s path includes service as a Combat Medic in the Army National Guard—a chapter that forged resilience and an unwavering sense of duty. He now serves as a board member for Huts for Vets, a nonprofit dedicated to wilderness therapy for veterans through the 10th Mountain Huts system.
His academic journey led him to Colorado Mesa University, followed by graduate studies at the University of Denver, where he specialized in Environmental Science, Policy, Law, and Management—an intellectual pursuit that echoes his lasting commitment to the stewardship of natural landscapes.
Now rooted in the Roaring Fork Valley, Crouch is not merely an observer of mountain life but a passionate participant in it. Whether fly fishing the Fryingpan, skiing Aspen’s demanding winter terrain, trail running along wildflower-laced ridgelines, or biking beneath the imposing silhouette of Mt. Sopris, he embodies the outdoor ethos that makes this place so singular. He also golfs, hikes, paddle boards, and finds meaning in every moment spent immersed in the landscape and friendships he calls home.
At The Aspen Times, where he can be reached at wcrouch@aspentimes.com or 970-384-9124, Crouch has earned a reputation for accessibility, intellectual depth, and a grounded understanding of the issues that matter most to locals. His journalism mirrors the essence of Western Colorado itself—authentic, generous, and deeply attuned to the ever-evolving story of the valley.
