Mahon: Submitting my name for consideration

I am submitting my name for consideration to fill the District 2 County Commissioner seat previously held by Kelly McNicholas Kury.

I’ve had the privilege of living in Pitkin County for more than 30 years, and I believe my background and values position me to contribute meaningfully to the discussions shaping our county’s future. I know this community, understand its challenges, and care deeply about ensuring it remains a place where we can live comfortably and sustainably.

My perspective is informed by decades as a resident, worker, and member of our outdoor community. I’ve worked throughout the resort economy — in hospitality, restaurants, property management, guiding, ski instruction, and as a columnist for The Aspen Times. I understand the issues facing local workers because I am one.

I identify with the outdoor recreation community and with those who care passionately about conservation. A decade of service on the city of Aspen Open Space and Trails Board and the Aspen Snowmass Environment Foundation strengthened my awareness of the stewardship needs of our valley: balancing recreation with protection of wildlife and natural resources.

I’ve built lasting relationships with organizations throughout the valley: local businesses, nonprofits, environmental groups, the ski company, and countless individuals who share a love for living here.

I am prepared to continue the important work of the current BOCC. Our commissioners have navigated development pressures, affordability concerns, and community growth while prioritizing conservation, responsible land use, and thoughtful governance. It’s my goal to support and strengthen its ongoing efforts.

We need to continue to preserve what we love while planning responsibly for the future. It would be an honor to represent District 2 and serve the community that has given so much to us all.

I appreciate your consideration.
