Klein: Understanding the facts of Aspen airport

In response to “New group opposing wider wingspans touching down at Aspen airport eyes November ballot question,” might I suggest that before one signs a petition, he or she should educate themselves with the underlying facts.

First of all, population density in this valley we call home is dictated by bed space, not the size of planes flying into the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport.

Second, many of the jets currently being used are being phased out due to age and technology for jets that carry slightly larger capacity (up to 10 persons), which are far more environmentally-favorable, much more quiet – but happen to have larger wingspans.

Third, the proponents of this group are advocating a self/Pitkin County-operated airport, rather than contacting those services to a corporation that has the skill set to do so. Why do they want to re-invent the wheel at a cost much higher to Pitkin County and those utilizing the airport?

Fourth, this group’s advocacy of the ALP (Airport Layout Plan) would likely result in reconstruction of the control tower, which the federal government will not pay for. I surmise that the list would go on.

In closing, Pitkin County has elected commissioners responsible for overlooking this process and acting in the best interests of all Pitkin County residents and all others who utilize the airport. They, in turn, have appointed citizens with knowledge and expertise to carry these issues to conclusion.

Before you sign a petition, either understand the facts or defer to those who do. This advocacy group is little more than a group of Chicken Littles waiting for a sky that will never fall.
