Morris Eugene Denton, 62, passed away on November 21st in Traverse City, Michigan, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He spent his final days surrounded by family, football, and queso—three of his greatest comforts.
Born December 10, 1962, in Austin, Texas, Morris grew up in Lubbock and later Aspen, Colorado, where he graduated from Aspen High School in 1980. A gifted soccer goalkeeper known as “El Gato,” he went on to play collegiately at Texas Tech and TCU before traveling through Europe as a semi-professional player. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, remaining a loyal Buffs fan throughout his life.
In Boulder, Morris met the love of his life, Laurie, and the two married in 1994, eventually settling in Austin to raise their children. Morris’s career was as varied as his interests—spanning IBM, global communications leadership roles, writing screenplays and novels, founding a sports marketing firm, and serving as CEO of a pioneering medical cannabis company. He cared far less about titles than about the friendships and adventures each chapter brought him. His work took him around the world and often behind the ropes at concerts, F1 races, and stages, where his gift for connecting with people always shone through.
Morris will be remembered for his quick wit, generosity, boundless curiosity, and the way he inspired everyone to live life with more courage and joy. A week before his passing, he reflected, “It will be the relationships, the friendships, and the adventures that I will take with me.”
He is survived by his wife, Laurie; his children, Lila and Spencer; mother Kay Denton; siblings Chris (Keith) Froebel and Kate (Dave) Fuentes; and a loving extended family and wide circle of friends whose lives he touched deeply.
