“Way to go, Alexi” congratulated an article in The Aspen Times, August 2, 1984. “All Olympic events are exciting, but few were as thrilling as the last-minute surge by Alexi Grewal to win the bicycle road race last Sunday. His break from the pack, his lone effort to stay ahead and the final duel with the great Canadian sprinter, Steve Bauer, enthralled millions of people watching on TV throughout the world. His victory was the culmination of years of training, countless miles of pedaling in all types of weather while other, less-dedicated riders were enjoying more social pleasures. The training and the resultant victories, including the Olympic gold, were personal efforts, manifestations of strength of will and character that few others have, or can even imagine. No one but Grewal, and perhaps his parents, who stimulated his early interest in the sport, can take credit for his accomplishments. But now that he has won the big gold, many will try. The victory moves him out of the talented, dedicated, boy-next-door class into a celebrity.” Alexi Grewal who grew up locally, trained, and raced in the Coors Classic held in Aspen and Snowmass, made his name by winning the gold medal in the road race for the 1984 Olympics, the first American (and Coloradan) to win gold in that event.
