Snowmass history: Campground lift

“Snowmass cuts new ski trails,” announced the Aspen Illustrated News on June 22, 1967. “Skiing trails at Snowmass-at-Aspen are being cut and cleared, Jim Snobble, tail supervisor for the Aspen Skiing Corporation, says. The Aspen Skiing Corp. is running the skiing aspect of the Snowmass-at-Aspen project. The project, a $10 million investment this year, is due to open in December with 50 miles of trails cut. Snobble said there were three men cutting trails and 23 men gathering the cut material from this year and last. He said that a caterpillar tractor is also helping with the stacking. Snobble said that the cutting was progressing on the number Five Lift area called the Campground. This area will eventually have a 3,500 foot vertical drop racing tail, Snobble said. The racing trail will not be ready this year, but it can be used for pleasure skiing, he said. The racing trail has to conform to FIS standards and the Aspen Skiing Corp. will not have time to get rid of some of the sharp dips, Snobble said. The trails being cut in the Campground area have not been named.”
