Snowmass History: Aspen Cup Race

“90 juniors enter 1st Aspen Cup race” headlined The Aspen Times on Jan. 10, 1974.

“Ninety junior racers under 13 years participated in the first Aspen Cup races of the season. The Bank of Aspen Classic, last weekend at Snowmass Resort and eight of them ended the two-day series with 50 points. Braving the heavy snow and cold to race two runs of giant slalom Saturday and two runs Sunday were an estimated 70 Aspen Age Class juniors and 20 from Glenwood Springs or Leadville.

“Amassing 50 points for first in class on each day were Beth Madsen, age 9; Mary Brennan, 10; Katherine Schumacher, 11; Brenda Carlson, 12; Jon-Eric Greene, age 8; Steve Menscher, 10; Mark Harvey, 11, and Andrew Ulrych, 12. Among the girls Ms. Madsen had the fastest time of the day on Saturday and Barb Ulrych had fastest time on Sunday, winning the age 13 category.



“In addition to the double class winners, other winners in one-event were: Karen Thrope, age 8; Jeff Poe, age 7; Mike Blake, 7; and John McBride, 9…. Seven of Aspen’s A racers were selected to compete I forthcoming Can Am series races. Tom Simons is one of 13 Americans chosen to race in Canada and Jamie Knowlton, Ned Ganz, Dan Sterling, and Bill Brown are to join him for the Utah races.”
