The Aspen School District announced on Thursday that Sarah Strassburger will be the new assistant superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.

Strassburger was an internal candidate with a history of two decades of service to the district, bringing “an unparalleled depth of local knowledge, academic leadership and a steadfast commitment to the Aspen community to her new district-wide role,” a press release states.

It added, “”Her transition to the central office marks a significant milestone for the district, ensuring that the curriculum and instructional strategies will be guided by a leader who has been instrumental in the district’s most successful initiatives.”

Strassburger started at the district in 2006 as an English teacher at Aspen High School, moving up through the leadership ranks to serve four years as assistant principal and the last six years as principal.

“Sarah’s 20-year legacy at Aspen High School is defined by her passion for student growth and her ability to lead through complex transformations,” Tharyn Mulberry, superintendent of Aspen School District, said in the release. “She understands our students, our teachers and our community’s values. We are thrilled to have her expertise guiding our curriculum and instruction across the entire district.”

As principal, Strassburger navigated the district through the COVID-19 pandemic and was “a driving force” behind the “IB for All” philosophy, the release confirms — expanding access to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and implementing the Middle Years Programme.

“A champion of experiential education, she has consistently emphasized learning beyond the classroom, including leading a meaningful shift toward a cell phone-free environment to enhance school culture and student focus,” the release reads.

She most recently assisted with the launch the inaugural issue of the AHS Alumni Magazine, which highlights the achievements of Aspen graduates.

“Aspen has been my home and my heart since I first visited during my time at Colorado College,” she said in the release. “I am honored to step into this new role to support all educators and students across the district. My goal remains the same: to prepare our students for meaningful futures and to ensure Aspen School District continues to lead with excellence and innovation.”

The Aspen School District will now actively be recruiting a new principal for Aspen High School over the next month, according to the release.

“The district is committed to a comprehensive search process to identify a leader who will continue the high school’s tradition of excellence and community engagement,” the release states.

Further details about the search timeline and opportunities for community input will be available in the coming weeks.
