The spring sports season marches on. But before we catch up, there is some news about a popular fall sport to attend to first.

Aspen football hires new head coach

Aspen High School announced on Wednesday that Bryce Sandoval has been named the next head football coach. A native of Las Cruces, New Mexico, he most recently has been coaching at both Bayfield and Durango high schools, focusing on the defensive line.

A graduate of Socorro High School, he was an all-state football player who went on to play defensive end at Southern Nazarene University. He’s been in Durango the past 10 years.

“Bryce believes in using football to help young men grow into disciplined, accountable, and high-character individuals. He’s excited to bring that mindset to Aspen,” the school wrote on social media in announcing the hire. “Having come from small, close-knit communities, Bryce says that he is proud to now be part of the Aspen Skiers family and he looks forward to building something special with this program and this town.”

He replaces Eric McCready, who resigned after three seasons as head coach. The Skiers went 5-4 this past fall but missed the postseason.

Boys lacrosse

The Aspen High School boys lacrosse team is off to one of its best starts in recent memory and has established itself as one of the teams to beat in Class 4A.

Now 6-0 overall, the Skiers are coming off back-to-back blowout wins, most recently a 14-1 win at Glenwood Springs on Tuesday. Prior to that, AHS hosted and beat highly ranked Battle Mountain, 11-1, on Saturday.

Up next, Aspen will return the favor with a trip to Edwards to face Battle Mountain on Saturday afternoon. It’s the second of four straight road games for the Skiers.

Girls lacrosse

Aspen girls lacrosse is sitting at 4-2 overall following a 19-5 win over Fruita Monument on Saturday. The Skiers are back at it on Thursday with an evening game at Grand Junction. They go to Steamboat on Saturday.

Roaring Fork lacrosse is 5-2 overall and riding a three-game win streak. Most recently, the Rams beat Eagle Valley, 21-2, on Monday. Up next, RFHS will play on Friday at Battle Mountain.

Girls soccer

Aspen girls soccer is 4-3 overall following back-to-back wins. The Skiers won 9-0 at CRMS on Tuesday and won 8-0 at Moffat County on Saturday.

Next up will be the Skiers’ home opener — in Game 8 — on Thursday against Basalt. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the AHS turf.

Basalt is 1-4-1 overall following Tuesday’s 4-1 loss at Roaring Fork. The Longhorns’ only victory came March 20 in a 2-0 home upset of Aspen.

Roaring Fork is 2-1-3 overall following a 1-1 draw with Steamboat on Wednesday.

Baseball

Aspen baseball hosted Rifle on Wednesday, losing 10-9 at Crawford Field in El Jebel. The Skiers, now 2-4 overall, next play twice on Saturday at Coal Ridge.

Basalt baseball remains 5-2 overall. The Longhorns’ last outing was their April 2 doubleheader split at Aspen. BHS plays Saturday in a doubleheader at Gunnison.

Girls golf

Aspen girls golf competed Monday and Tuesday in Montrose. Star senior Lenna Persson returned to the course on Monday at Cobble Creek, finishing second with 4-over 76. Battle Mountain’s Makena Thayer won with a round of 75. Aspen was sixth as a team.

On Tuesday at Black Canyon, Persson tied for second with an 8-over 80. Thayer won again with 73, while Amita Crowley of Montezuma-Cortez matched Persson’s score. AHS was again sixth as a team.

The Skiers are off until hosting their home tournament on Tuesday at Aspen Glen. AHS will also play on Wednesday at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale.

Girls tennis

Aspen girls tennis had been scheduled to play on Wednesday at Glenwood Springs. AHS is scheduled to host both Cedaredge and Vail Christian next week to close out the regular season.

Basalt (0-4 in matches) is off until going to Salida on Monday.

Track and field

Area track and field teams are expected to converge in Glenwood Springs on Saturday for the Demons’ annual home meet. State track is set for May 15-17 in Lakewood.
