PHOTOS: Aspen boys lacrosse beats Ponderosa, to host state QF game

The Aspen High School boys lacrosse team is into the Class 4A state quarterfinals after taking down No. 13 seed Ponderosa on Friday, winning 12-5 on the AHS turf.
The No. 4-seeded Skiers, now 13-3 overall, will next host No. 5 Lutheran (also 13-3) at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Aspen. The Lions are coming off a 7-6 win over No. 12 Golden in the second round.
The winner will advance to Saturday’s state semifinal in Denver against either No. 1 Air Academy or No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain. The other two quarterfinal games include No. 2 Evergreen vs. No. 7 Battle Mountain, and No. 3 Grand Junction vs. No. 6 Telluride.
The 4A state championship game is scheduled for Monday, May 18, at the University of Denver’s Peter Barton Stadium. The AHS boys lacrosse program has one state title to its name, winning it all in 2015.

Girls lacrosse time updates
No. 8 Aspen girls lacrosse will play at No. 1 Battle Mountain at 6 p.m. Monday in Edwards. That winner advances to Wednesday’s semifinals against either No. 4 Evergreen or No. 5 Steamboat Springs.
At 4 p.m. Monday, No. 3 Roaring Fork girls lacrosse will host No. 6 Cheyenne Mountain for a state quarterfinal game in Carbondale. That winner will advance to face either No. 2 Golden or No. 7 Air Academy in the semifinals.
Regional baseball on deck
Aspen baseball hasn’t slowed down as the regular season approaches its end. The Skiers have pushed their win streak to five games following Saturday’s 7-5 win at Roaring Fork. That followed Thursday’s 12-7 win over the Rams at Crawford Field.
Now 18-3 overall, AHS only has a home doubleheader against Battle Mountain (11-8-1) on Tuesday remaining. Those games have been adjusted to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. start times.
Holding steady at No. 4 among Class 3A schools in the CHSAA seeding index as of Sunday, Aspen is closing in on a top eight seed, meaning AHS would host regional play later in the week. Only No. 1 University, No. 2 Eaton and No. 3 Montezuma-Cortez were sitting higher than the Skiers.
Battle Mountain was No. 37 in Class 4A as of Sunday.
Roaring Fork (10-13) continues to sit just inside the 3A regional cutoff, holding down No. 28 as of Sunday afternoon. The Rams do not have any more games scheduled for the regular season.
Basalt baseball (7-14) is coming off a 10-0 loss at Eaton on Saturday. The Longhorns will host Olathe at 3 p.m. Monday and then have added a 4 p.m. home game against Glenwood Springs on Tuesday that will close out the regular season.
BHS was No. 35 in the seeding index as of Sunday; only 32 teams qualify for regional play.
