Officials confirm first Grand County sheep taken by wolf

On Wednesday, July 17, officials confirmed another wolf depredation in Grand County. A single sheep was involved, making it the first sheep that has been killed or injured by a wolf in the county since reintroduction.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife posted the incident on the wolf depredation report webpage on Friday, July 19. No claim has been submitted yet for the sheep.
The last confirmed wolf depredation in Grand County occurred about two months ago in May and involved one yearling heifer.
Parks and Wildlife has confirmed 13 wolf depredation incidents in Colorado since they were released in December 2023. This incident makes a total of eight animals killed by wolves in Grand County since reintroduction.
On Nov. 17, 2023, three sheep were injured or killed by a wolf in Jackson County and the owner was compensated $489, according to the wolf depredation report webpage. Those wolves naturally migrated into Colorado from Wyoming and were not reintroduced.
Parks and Wildlife is not releasing any additional information on the depredation outside what has been shared on its website.
