“Aspen State’s Brooms ready to fix Nebraska,” declared The Aspen Times on Oct. 16, 1980.
“The never beaten and winless Aspen State Teacher’s College Brooms are looking for a sweep over the visiting Nebraska Cornhuskers Saturday at Wagner Park in a nationally televised ‘contest’ that is the highlight of the annual ASTC homecoming weekend. Quite a bit of corn and very little husking is expected during the festivities, which include a pep rally at the Final Exam at 8pm the night before, and a homecoming dance at 9pm after the Brooms are done winning the game. Kickoff is 1pm local time, and 11am Yukon Standard Time for viewers in Burwash Landing in the Yukon, where the game will be seen live and in its entirety. Though the usual financial arrangements have been made with the referees, the Brooms are only a slight favorite over the visiting Cornhuskers, and the home team will be a decided underdog should Nebraska show up for the game. A committee investigating charges that referees for the game are deaf, dumb, blind and on the ASTC payroll recently concluded that the officials are quite intelligent.”
