The 20th Annual Roaring Fork Watershed Photo Contest is officially underway, and Roaring Fork Conservancy is looking for the best photos taken within the Roaring Fork Watershed.
Both amateur and professional photographers can submit before the Monday, Nov. 17, deadline. Photos published elsewhere will not be considered.
Everyone looking to participate must have a Google Account, according to RFC’s website. For those needing to confirm watershed boundaries, RFC’s watershed maps are available at roaringfork.org/your-watershed/roaring-fork-watershed-maps.
This year’s photo contest has two categories, according to a press release:
- Major Rivers of the Roaring Fork Watershed
- Photos in this category should feature the Roaring Fork River, Crystal River, and Fryingpan River

- Tributary Streams of the Roaring Fork Watershed
- Photos in this category should focus on smaller streams and rivers that flow into the Roaring Fork, Crystal, and Fryingpan rivers — examples of tributaries include Maroon Creek, Castle Creek, Lime Creek, Coal Creek, Cattle Creek, Thompson Creek, Snowmass Creek, Yule Creek, Avalanche Creek, and Brush Creek

Photographers using drone cameras must follow all regulations where photos are taken, according to RFC’s website. Those who submit a photo taken by illegal drone use will be disqualified from the contest and reported.
Prizes will be awarded for “Best of” within the following categories:
- Best Professional Photo: Major Rivers of the Roaring Fork Watershed
- Best Professional Photo: Tributary Streams of the Roaring Fork Watershed
- Best Amateur Photo: Major Rivers of the Roaring Fork Watershed
- Best Amateur Photo: Tributary Streams of the Roaring Fork Watershed
- People’s Choice Award (voted on by the public via Facebook)
Photos will be judged by professional photographers who are not participating in the contest.
“Judging criteria includes but is not limited to composition, clarity, subject matter relevant to the watershed, and overall aesthetic feeling,” RFC’s website states.
Prizes are sponsored by Two Leaves and a Bud, according to the release.
Winning photos will also be published on roaringfork.org, social media, and in print in RFC materials.
Contest rules and submission guidelines can be found at roaringfork.org/education-and-outreach/annual-photo-contest. Questions can be emailed to Christina Medved at christina@roaringfork.org.
