Western Slope volleyball stars recognized

Pass, set, spike — volleyball’s best collected all-league honors this week.

The Western Slope League coaches announced the selections to the all-conference team for 2013. All-league honorable mention selections also were announced.

Postseason qualifiers Gunnison and Coal Ridge led the selections this season.



Gunnison had three players named to the all-league team as did Coal Ridge. Each school also had three honorable mention selections.

Aspen High School was represented by senior Shannon Turbidy. She was voted to the honorable mention team for 2013 by the conference’s volleyball coaches.




Turbidy is a first-team all-league lacrosse player for the Skiers.

Basalt was honored with one selection to the honorable mention team.

Senior Carolyn Devan, of the Longhorns, was Basalt’s lone representative for 2013.

Three Gunnison seniors led the voting as all-league players.

They were Sydney Archuleta, Caylor Albers and Marisa Danos.

Gunnison also had three honorable mention selections this year — senior Sarah Shamblin, senior Jordan Wallin and senior Leanne Schliesman.

Coal Ridge’s first-team all-stars were junior Maggie Bell, junior Leah Kanakaaj and senior Alicia Hampton.

The Cowboys’ honorable mention selections were senior Jacklyn Collins, junior Bailey Davis and junior Britni Allen.

Olathe landed two all-league selections — seniors Tori Davis and Kayley Archuleta.

The Pirates also had two honorable mentions — junior Theresa Tafoya and junior Josie Ruth.

Grand Valley’s Kyra Chenoweth and Kylyn Rigsby were voted to the all-league first team. Chenoweth is a junior. Rigsby is the only freshman named to the All-Western Slope League team.

Megan Smith and Jordan Scott, both juniors, were voted all-league honorable mention for the Cardinals.

Three Roaring Fork players were honored this week.

Senior Taila Howe was voted to the all-conference team.

Toni Gross and Josie Horn, two seniors, were honorable mention selections.

Cedaredge landed Kenzie Henderson, a sophomore, on the all-league team. Sierra McHugh, another Cedaredge senior, was an honorable mention selection.

Jordan Cody, a Rifle senior, completed the all-league team. Teammate Sarah McCutchan was named to the honorable mention team.

Moffat County had one player honored this week. Shaye Zimmerman, a senior at Craig, was an honorable mention selection for the Bulldogs.

Voting for the all-conference teams was conducted by the league’s coaches.
