Walla, AHS on top again

After a string of vexed finishes, a half-dozen second-place ribbons and then a loss by sudden-death playoff, Aspen’s Nate Walla claimed his second victory in as many days Wednesday.

One day after breaking through on his home Aspen Golf Club course, Walla blitzed the 12-team field with a 4-over par 74 for another one-stroke victory in the Demon Invitational at the Glenwood Springs Golf Club.

“Seventy-four was as good as any of the best golfers in the area could muster today, and that was one heckuva round with all that wind,” said assistant coach Henry Adams.

Two of Walla’s teammates, Lawrence Poh and Ryan Doremus, cracked the top five to lift AHS to its second straight victory, this time by a whopping nine strokes. Poh carded a 78 for fourth place overall, and Doremus locked up a tie for fifth position with a 79.

“That’s a tough course. You’ve got to be playing good golf to shoot in the 70s there,” Adams said. “We’re real pleased with that.

“For Nate, he had something like nine seconds and finally he breaks through, and now he’s got his second one in two days. He’s paid his dues, kept plugging at it, and it’s come through for him.”

Battle Mountain’s Keith Denton was second, one stroke behind Walla at 75. Willie Edwards of Palisade was third (76), followed by Poh then Doremus, tied with Roaring Fork’s Chris Webster and Adam Joiner at 79.

“I didn’t start out well,” said Walla. “I hit only five fairways today and I just had to grind it out.”

Walla carded a 38 on the front nine and a 36 on the second rotation.

Battle Mountain and Roaring Fork tied for second place with a three-player combined score of 240, nine strokes behind Aspen, while Glenwood Springs was third (242), and Basalt trailed in 12th (300).
