Tennis: Aspen second at regional, qualifies all 11 for state

The Aspen High School boys tennis team took second at its regional tournament, held Thursday and Friday in Grand Junction. The Skiers fell short of the regional crown to Steamboat Springs, 72 to 68.

Aspen did, however, qualify all 11 of its players for next week’s Class 4A state tournament in Pueblo.

“Steamboat just played the big points better than we did. We had chances in most of the doubles matches, but couldn’t close the match,” Aspen coach Gary Quandt wrote in an email. “This is only the second time we have qualified 11 players, so I’m very happy about that.”

Against Steamboat, the Skiers went 4-0 in singles matches in straight sets, but lost all four doubles matches in three sets.

Aspen has finished in the top 10 at state the past three years.
