Streaky Basalt baseball opens playoffs at Eagle

Steve Benson

By winning two of their last three games, Basalt High’s baseball team stayed ahead of Aspen to avoid a last-place seed in the Class 3A Western Slope League playoffs, which begin today.

The Longhorns will travel to Eagle Valley for the postseason opener, scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

In order to have any chance of knocking off No. 2 seed Eagle Valley, Basalt head coach Seann Goodman said the Longhorns have to find some consistency.

“We don’t play everything at the same time,” he said. “We’ll go in streaks – we’ll have good hitting, but bad defense.”

While the Longhorns have been hot at the plate, scoring 35 runs in their last three games, they’ve been not so hot defensively, allowing 19 runs.

The Longhorns beat Debeque 15-10 last week and split a doubleheader with Battle Mountain Saturday, winning the first game 18-7 before falling 5-2 in the second.

Darren Duroux, a sophomore, has added some consistency to the lineup with productive play at the plate and on the mound. Duroux was the winning pitcher in the first game Saturday while going 5-5 with a home run, a double and three singles.

“His bat’s been on fire,” Goodman said.

While Goodman can only hope his team finds a groove and avoids mistakes, he is confident in one aspect of their play.

“One of the best things we do have going for us is a positive attitude,” he said. “We can play with anybody if we want to.”
