Softball: Basalt falls to Lamar at state

The Basalt High School softball team slammed into No. 6 seed Lamar to open the State Softball Championships in Aurora.

The Longhorns, the No. 11 seed making a return trip to 3A softball’s elite level, lost a 14-4 decision to Lamar on Friday.

Lamar (15-7) then lost to No. 3 overall seed La Junta, a team that went on to win the Class 3A state championship Saturday afternoon. La Junta beat Lamar 5-2 to advance to the final four of the state tournament.

The Longhorns, including players from Basalt, Glenwood Springs and Roaring Fork high schools, finished the season 13-8 with a second consecutive trip to the finals.

In other first-round games, Cedaredge lost to Burlington 13-2.

No. 1 and two-time defending state champion Strasburg eliminated Burlington 4-2 to reach the final.

No. 4 seed Sterling advanced with a 9-4 win over Eaton after Eaton had eliminated Rocky Ford 8-3.

Valley, the No. 2 overall seed, beat Brush 7-1 to reach the final four. Brush had ousted Longmont Skyline 14-5.

In the state semifinals, Strasburg edged Sterling 4-3 and La Junta shut out Valley 1-0. La Junta stopped Strasburg 3-2 in the championship game.

La Junta finished the season 20-2; Strasburg ended at 22-1.

Valley closed the season 18-4; Sterling 16-6.

The state finals were played at the Aurora Sports Complex.
